‘It’s not how you treat freedom fighters’

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday stopped at the order of the High Court of Allahabad and refused to summons Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Veer Savarkar,
During the hearing, the Apex court issued a rigorous reminder to the Leader of the Opposition stating that Savarkar is honored in Maharashtra and warned the results to make derogatory remarks about freedom fighters.
The court, especially, mentioned the historical context, stating that Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother Indira Gandhi wrote a letter praising Savarkar.
The Supreme Court asked Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi to appear for Rahul, “Does your client know that her grandmother, when she was the Prime Minister, when she praised the gentleman. Therefore, the Supreme Court did not make a non -responsible statements about freedom fighters,” the Supreme Court asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhli to be present for Rahul.
The apex court said, “It is not that when you do not know anything about the history and geography of the country, how do you treat freedom fighters.”
The court also attracted parallel to Mahatma Gandhi’s correspondence during the British era, where he used the phrase “Your loyal servant”.
The case arises from Gandhi’s controversial statements about Savarkar during a Bharat Jodo Yatra rally in Akola district of Maharashtra on 17 November 2022.
Advocate Nripendra Pandey later filed a defamation complaint, stating that Gandhi’s comment was deliberately intended to discredit Savarkar.
