He wrote a script and planned to direct his first film with Star-Stad Cast, Dharmendra, Rekha and Jaya Prada.In a chat with Rediff in 2015, he said, “After quitting acting, I wrote a script and decided to direct a film with Dharmendra, Rekha and Jaya Prada,” he shared. It seemed like the right beginning. Rekha, who was his co-star in his first film, was also ready to be a part of it. He said, “Rekha and I were good friends because I gave the first shot of my life in ‘Sawan Bhadon’,” he said.Everything was falling in place. But things took a stunning turn, and it had nothing to do with acting.Rekha’s personal requestThe film, which was titled ‘Karanama’, was planned with an evening shooting schedule. But one day, Ranjit received an unexpected call from Rekha. “Karanma’s first schedule was an evening innings. One day, Rekha called and requested if I could take the schedule in the morning shift because she wanted to spend the evening with Amitabh Bachchan.” This simple request placed Ranjit in a difficult place. It was not possible to change the entire shoot schedule. Therefore, he did not say. “I refused cordial, so he left the film and returned the signature amount.”Get out of the line, enter into troubleThe decision of Rekha to move away has a wave effect. The schedule was pushed back, Dharmendra moved to other projects, and the entire plan had to be changed. Ranjit said that Dharmendra suggested to give Anita Raj a place as a king. But in the end, the film took a different direction. ‘Karanama’ eventually completed with a new artists, including Farah, Kimi Katkar and Vinod Khanna. It hit theaters in 1990. “It did an average business (when it was released in 1990),” said the iconic villain.
