Wasim Jafar disagrees cricket with Shubman Gill as India Test Captain candidate

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has suggested that Shubman Gill should lead India’s Test team during the upcoming England tour when Jasprit Bumrah needs rest. After Rohit Sharma’s recent Test retirement, the captaincy debate has intensified, in which India is preparing for the five -match series starting from June 20.Expressing his views on the social media platform X, Jafar said, “I think Bumrah likes an automatic captaincy, until he wants responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill, whenever Bumrah needs rest.Gill is currently leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, with Bumrah, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, among the many candidates being considered for Test captaincy.Bumrah has already led India in three trials, including a win in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia last year. However, Bumrah’s fitness is a concern for the tour of England. He experienced a back injury during a final test at Sydney, preventing him from bowling in the second innings. The same back injury, which required surgery in early 2023, made Bumra a successful 2025 Champions Trophy campaign in Dubai.
KL Rahul has the experience of the previous Test Captain, who has led India in three trials, including a 2–0 win win in Bangladesh in December 2022.Quiz: Who is that IPL player?India has not won a test series in England since the 1–0 victory under the leadership of Rahul Dravid in 2007.The upcoming England tour includes matches of Edgbaston (2–6 July), Lords (July 10–14), Old Trafford (July 23–27), and Oval (31 July to 4 August 4).
