Pakistan appointed ISI chief Asim Malik as NSA, which increases tension with India on the Pahgam terror attack
Pakistan has named its current spy chief, Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim MalikAs a new National Security Advisor (NSA), for the first time, a serving Inter-Services will hold both important positions as Director General of Intelligence (ISI).
The appointment declared through a cabinet division notification on Tuesday comes at an important time as the India-Pakistan relations deteriorate after the deadly Pahgam terror attack on 22 April, claiming 26 civilians. The notification states, “Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik Hi (M), DG (I), will hold additional charge of National Security Advisor with immediate effect.”
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has denied the allegations of India connecting Pakistan with the Pahalgam attack. Sharif called for a fair inquiry into the incident and urged the United States to discourage India from giving stimulating statements.
Addressing the issue of Indus Waters Treaty, Sharif emphasized that the agreement, which provides necessary water resources to 240 million people, does not allow unilateral return by any country.
