UK Court Jails Uganda’s judge on slavery sentence

A senior judge, who worked with the United Nations as well as the High Court of Uganda, was convicted of enslaving a young woman to act as a maid in the United Kingdom.

Judge convicted under modern slavery act

The prosecutors said that Mugamba cheated a young woman from Uganda to work as a maid to visit the UK in 2022 and provide a childcare without salary. Mugamba was studying PhD at the University of Oxford at that time.
Mugamba was also accused of plotting with John Leonard Mugarwa, Deputy Commissioner of Uganda in London, to lie on his visa application and take the victim to Britain.
The judge was found guilty in four cases in March: the conspiracy to facilitate the commission of violation of the UK’s immigration law, the convenience of traveling in terms of exploitation, forcing someone to work, and composition to intimidate a witness after a test.

What did the victim say about her treatment?

Judge David Foxton called it a “very tragic case” on Friday, pointing to the legal achievements of Mugamba, working to protect human rights.
“You have not shown any regrets for your conduct at all. Instead, you continue, completely unjustly I am afraid, to portray myself as a victim,” Foxton said.
The victim reported to be in “almost constant fear”, according to a written statement read in the court.
Due to Mugambay’s powerful standing in Uganda, she said that she could “go back” in her country and was afraid that she could never see her mother again.
