Uganda suspends ‘military cooperation with Germany’: Army | world News
Uganda has “suspended” all military cooperation with Germany, its army spokesperson said on Sunday, the German ambassador claims that the East African is “engaged in destroying activities” in the East African country.The growth follows another army statement on Friday, alleging that some European diplomatic missions were supporting “negative and traitors groups” against the government, also excluding German Ambassador Mathius Shauur.It also comes because Uganda is facing increasing international condemnation on its treatment of the opposition.“Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has suspended all the ongoing defense and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany with immediate effect,” Army spokesman Chris Magazi said on X.Magaji said that the move was “in response to reliable intelligence reports that the current German Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mathiyas Shauur, is actively engaged in destructive activities in the country”.Magazi said that the suspension would “be in force as long as the entire resolution of ambassador’s participation with hostile pseudo-political-civil forces working in the country against the Government of Uganda”.He did not give further details, but confirmed the AFP that “the decision has been taken”.The German embassy in Uganda has not publicly commented.Human rights groups say Uganda has intensified its rift on opponents and disgruntled as they are ready for the presidential election in the next seven months.The President’s son and successor, Muhuji Kaneerugaba, has often threatened the members of the opposition, recently claimed to kidnap the bodyguard of the country’s chief opposition leader and torture him in his basement.Local media recently reported a meeting among European diplomats, including Shauur and President of President Yovery Museweni.During the meeting, Shauur allegedly criticized the frequent colored social media posts by Canarugab, who is also the head of the Uganda army.It is not clear at this level what effect the steps to suspend military cooperation may have.Germany and Uganda have long -term relationships, the German Embassy has marked the relationship as one of the “stability and belief” on its website.Schauer has served as ambassador to the European nation since 2020.According to the German Embassy, bilateral trade between two last year was approximately $ 335 million, given that Uganda mainly imported “machinery and chemical products”.
