Turki’s Erdogan appointed a legal team to draf the new constitution, an extended rule feared

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Taip Erdogan said on Tuesday that he has appointed a team of legal experts to start working on a new constitution – critics say that they may get permission to remain in power beyond 2028, when their current term ends. Erdogan, who has led Turkey as President since 2014 and was Prime Minister for more than a decade before, has advocated for a new constitution, arguing that the draft after a military coup in 1980 was currently prepared, old and maintains elements of military influences, even if it has been revised many times. “Till tomorrow, I have entrusted 10 legal experts to start my work, and with this effort, we will proceed with the preparation of the new constitution,” Erdogan in a speech told the local administrators of his ruling party. “For 23 years, we have repeatedly demonstrated our honest intentions to crown our democracy with a new citizen and liberal constitution.” Under the current Constitution, Erdogan cannot run again until the initial elections are called or the legal structure changes. Critics push as a potential path to a new constitution again, allowing legal changes that will bypass constitutional term boundaries. Erdogan, who has become rapidly powerful over the years, has refused to demand a new constitution to remain in power, last week “We want the new constitution not to ourselves, but for our country.” Erdogan’s ruling party and its nationalist allies lack the votes required to enter a new constitution. Some analysts believe that the government’s recent attempt to end the long struggle with terrorist Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, is part of a strategy to achieve the support of a Kurdish party in Parliament for the New Charter. The attempt to present a new constitution comes after the month of Istanbul’s popular Mayor and a prominent Erdogan rival Ekrem Imamoglu and arrested on corruption charges. His arrest has been widely considered politically motivated, although the government said that the Turkia’s judiciary is free and free from political influence. This began broader performances for his release and ended the Democratic Backsliding of the Turkes under Erdogan.
