Trump withdraws money for research with the aim of saving infants with heart defects

On March 30, Dr. at Cornell University. The $ 6.7 million grant honored to James Antaki and his team was to support the next stage of development for the pediaflow device. Battery -shaped pump is designed to help newborns with congenital heart defects until they can undergo surgery or receive a transplant.
But on 8 April, the Defense Department issued a stop-work order, effectively canceled the money without offering a reason. The research team now faces an uncertain future, with the Antaki warning that the new funding is not safe within 90 days if the staff is prone to trimmed and development.
“It is difficult to accept,” Antaki told NBC News. “This is more than a project – this is a mission. We are doing so for children.”
The cancellation is one of many sudden money refunds associated with the widespread cost-cutting measures initiated by the revived administration of US President Donald Trump. The government’s efficiency department-maintained by Elon Musk has led the allegations in reducing the academic and scientific grants considered “non-essential”.
Medical professionals have expressed an alarm to the move. “This device has heavy capacity,” a pediatric cardiologist Dr. Ivan Zahan said. “Losing this funding is a real blow for pediatric medicine.”
1 out of about 100 children are born with heart defects in America every year. With ongoing research, Antaraki believes that Pediaflo can provide hope to thousands of families – but only if the work is allowed to continue.
