News Week reported that the Trump administration is rethinking its plan to impose parked ports on ships associated with China.
The proposal introduced by the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) in February was part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce dependence on Chinese-made ships. But critics warned that it helps in causing more damage to the US economy.
Proposed fee – $ 3 million per port call – will apply to ships built in China or operate by Chinese companies. During the public hearing, several business representatives said that it can disrupt the supply chains and increase costs, as many global ships have relations with China. He also stated that it would take many years to change these ships, as there has been a rapid decline in American ship manufacturing – from 70 ships in a year to only five in a year.
