Beijing: South -Western China suddenly collapsed in a storm on a river in South -West China, causing nine dead and one disappeared, the state media said on Monday. State Broadcaster CCTV said that more than 80 people fell into the Wu River, when the wide winds hit the beautiful area in Guizhou province on Sunday afternoon, the state’s broadcast CCTV said.
Initial reports stated that two tourist boats had cap, but CCTV and official Xinhua news agency said on Monday that four boats were involved. It was not clear that any victim was on the other two boats.
The boats collapsed after a sudden rains and the hailstorm hit Wu, which was a tributary of China’s longest river Yangtzi. In a video shared by state media, one man can be seen performing CPR on another, while one of the ships turned upside down.
Guizhou’s mountains and rivers are a major tourism draw, and many Chinese are traveling during the five -day national holiday ending on Monday.
Xinhua said on Sunday that Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a “all-out attempt” to find the missing and care of the injured.
Xi’s administration has pushed to reduce the toll of death in China’s transport sector, but overloading, poorly created vehicles and lack of safety equipment have disappointed those efforts, especially during major holidays.
CCTV stated that around 40 people were on board in each of the capsized boats and were not overloaded.
An eyewitness told the state -owned Beijing News that the water was deep but some people managed to swim in security. However, the storm had suddenly arrived and a thick haze obscured the surface of the river.
