Doha: The new President of Syrian arrived at Qatar on Tuesday, the state media said, for its first official visit to the Gulf, a major backer of the new administration after a long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad’s expulsion.
The official Qatar News Agency informed Imir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Shara when he came to the Hamad International Airport in Doha.
Earlier, the Syrian Foreign Minister posted on X that he was “on the first presidential journey of the country, standing by the Syrian people since day one and has never left them”.
Shara and Shabani’s visit to Qatar falls on the heels of the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, where he met Amirti’s President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who expressed his country’s support for the reconstruction of Syria.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Islamist group of Shara, led the rebellious alliance which excluded Asad from power on 8 December.
His new administration has been supported from several countries, including the major backchers Türkiye and Qatar, as well as several Arab states.
Qatar was one of the first Arab countries to return the armed rebellion, which was exploded by Assad’s government in 2011 after crushing a peaceful rebellion. Unlike other Arab countries, Doha did not restore diplomatic relations with Syria under Assad.
New officials have been engaged in a hurry to diplomatic activity since taking power, and Shara has visited Turkey along with several Arab countries.
Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aaun sent Berut to Doha on Tuesday, his office said, on the first visit to the Gulf country since his January election.
“The yatra will continue till tomorrow afternoon, and it will include a bilateral meeting between President Eon and Qatar’s rich, as well as expanded talks, including both Katri and Lebanese delegations,” said AON’s presidential office.
A day earlier, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salaam met Shara in Damascus at an attempt to reboot the relationship between the two neighbors.
Since the uprooting of Berut and Damascus Assad, the relationship has been demanding improvement, whose family dynasty has been under control over Lebanese matters for decades and accused several officers in Lebanon who expressed their rule.
The Middle East analyst Andreas Kriag said that since the collapse of the Assad government, Qatar had emerged as “the most important negotiator with the al-shara government in the Arab world, at least after Turkey”.
He said that the Gas-rich Gulf Eirrat was an “diplomatic force multiplier” for the government in Syria and would be able to connect the Syrian people with Lebanese “which is extremely important for both countries”.
Sheikh Tamim visited Damascus in January, became the first state head to travel since Asad’s Ooster.
Doha has promised to support Syrian infrastructure rehabilitation, and announced an agreement to provide Syria with 200 MW power in January, increasing production slowly.
The Syrian officials are seeking assistance from the rich states for reconstruction after nearly 14 years of war.
Qatar is one of the financial and in-in-law supporters for the Lebanese military and promised support for reconstruction in February after a recent confrontation between Hizbullah and Israel.
