The gunmen killed two policemen guarding the polio team in Pakistan’s Balochistan province

Two Pakistani police officers were shot dead on Wednesday while protecting a polio vaccination team in Teri area of Mastung district of Balochistan, officials confirmed, earlier this week, since the introduction of nationwide inoculation drives started and marked the second fatal attack on such teams.
According to local administrator Manan Taaren, the attack occurred when two unknown gunmen set the motorcycle riding the officers, as they guarded outside a house, where health workers were administration of polio drops to children.
Taaren told AFP, “One of the policemen died on the spot, while the other was seriously injured and later died in the hospital.” “The team of health workers remained unpublished, as they were inside a house with the immunization.”
The identity of the attackers remains unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, such attacks have been regularly carried out by terrorist organizations that see vaccination campaigns with doubts, often accusing them of covered for espionage.
Shahid Rind, a spokesman of the provincial government, confirmed the death and said that security agencies were investigating the attack. He said that despite the attack, vaccination efforts will continue and security of security around the teams will be reviewed and strengthened.
The incident follows a similar attack in the rest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa earlier this week, where a police officer was shot with a vaccination team.
Polio remains spatial in only two countries- Pakistan and Afghanistan- and efforts to eradicate the virus have been severely interrupted by frequent attacks on health workers and their safety escorts. Since 2012, more than 100 health workers and police personnel have been killed in such targeted attacks in Pakistan.
The Pakistani government has continued its fight against polio with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international partners. The current nationwide campaign aims to vaccinate millions of children under five years of age, especially in high -risk areas such as Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
