In the threat of a “national security”, two Chinese citizens are allegedly accused by the Bureau of Federal Investigation for plotting a toxic fungus in the United States, making it “potential agrotorism weapons”. While Gian is currently in American custody, Liu’s hideouts are unknown.The US Department of Justice said that both individuals hatched a conspiracy to illegally bring Fusarium Graminierum – a fungi that causes “head blight” in crops like wheat, barley, maize and rice – in states.“These two aliens have been accused of smuggling a fungus, described as a ‘potential agrotorism weapon’ in Hartland, USA, where they clearly intend to use the laboratory of the University of Michigan,” said American Attorney Jerome Gorgon Junior.

How dangerous is ‘toxic fungus’

According to scientific research, fungi is considered a possible agricultural threat, which is due to the ability to incite billions of dollars in annual agricultural damage. It can also create serious health risks, including vomiting, liver damage and reproductive issues in both humans and animals.“This toxic fungus ’causes a disease of head blight,’ wheat, barley, maize and rice, and is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide every year. Fusarium is causing vomiting, liver damage, and breeding defects in humans and livestocks,” said the US Deputy of Jestices.The FBI recovered a scientific article on Liu’s phone titled “Plant-Pathogen Warfare” on Liu’s phone, which deliberately enhances the suspicion of intentions. The pathogen was allegedly intended for unauthorized research at the Michigan Laboratory University, where Liu’s partner, Unicing Jian worked. The university lacked the federal permit required to handle such material.
