In a blunt message, US state secretary Marco Rubio said on Friday that Denmark should believe with the reality that “Greenlanders do not want to be a part of it.”
“Denmark should focus on the fact that Greenlanders do not want to be part of Denmark,” Rubio Said after a meeting of NATO’s foreign ministers in Brussels. The comment adds a new edge to the ongoing diplomatic tension on Greenland, a semi-authentic Danish region rich in natural resources and is strategically located in the Arctic.
Rubio’s comments come in Greenland amidst increasing American interest and increasing concerns over the potential Chinese influence in the region. He clarified that Washington respected Greenland’s right to decide his future, it would not allow the island to fall into China’s economic orbit.
Rubio reiterated the US strategic concerns in the Arctic, saying, “What we are going to do now let China come in and provide them a group of money, and depend on China.”
Greenland, homes of about 57,000 people, have long expressed the desire for freedom. Pole shows a significant majority of support away from Denmark, although there is a slight indication that they will favor joining the United States instead.
Tension increased last week when US Vice President JD Vance Visited Greenland. Rubio defended the journey, stating that it outlined the American position of honoring the island’s self -determination. However, the journey was seen as a stimulant by Nuk and both Copenhagen,
Despite diplomatic friction, Rubio said that he had assured his Danish equivalent of “strong” relations between the two countries during a meeting on the occasion of the NATO Summit.
