One of the four international students in the US was from India: 4.2 lakh Indian students, there was an increase in numbers during 2024.

The total number of F -1 and M -1 International Student Sevis records operating in the US was 15.8 lakhs in 2024, marking an increase of 5.3% in the previous calendar year. According to a report released by American Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – ‘No. 2024’ by Sevis, while international students said to over 229 countries, this growth increased to a great extent by students in India.Asia had the largest number of international student records operating in the US, about 11 million students of this continent had about 72% of the total foreign student population. Around 4.2 million Indian students represented an increase of 11.8% compared to 2023, while 3.2 lakh foreign students from China, which is other major source country, represented a short reduction of 0.25 percent compared to 2023. Indian students formed about 27% of the total foreign student population in 2024, followed by sugar 20%.The data of this report is designed from the student and exchange visitor information system (SEVIS), a web-based system, which the Homeland Security Department uses to maintain and manage information about foreign students and exchange visitors. While F -1 visa is conducted by those undergoing educational studies courses, M -1 visa is given to students undergoing business programs.According to the ice-report, 14.3 lakh international students were nominated in higher education degree programs to be more than 90% or accurate, California nominated the largest number of foreign students at 2.37 lakhs, followed by 1.72 lakhs in New York. Draw the maximum number of international studentsWhile it is based on the data of ice-report 2024, recent trends are not as Rosie. Chris R, a professor and higher education expert at Boston College. Glass analyzed sevis data between March 2024 to March 2025. According to him, “March 2024 from -11.3% overall decline (with 11.53 lakh active students) is notable in both March 2025 (with 10.22 lakh active students) scale and speed.”Their study shows that the number of students in India declined by 3.54 lakhs to about 28% to 2.55 lakhs in March 2024. As of March 2025, the number of Chinese students rose 3.28% to 2.63 lakhs.Glass states that “The current year-on-year decline is a reflection of a nomination cycle that started under the Biden administration, so the number of March 2025 is still to reflect any impact of policies implemented under another Trump administration.”Accessory evidence suggests that the US is losing its brightness as an attractive study destination for Indian students, such as a crowd of factors: the arbitrary termination of Sevis Records and/or the F1 visa of international students – due to which many people themselves got deported, while others remained back to fight in courts. Uncertainty related to the continuity of extended alternative practical training programs (OPT) for STEM students, a socio-media probe policy in Corporate America and temporary suspension of pending complication interviews of large-scale trimming sorting. Thus, the number for March 2026 can be very low.
Indian students dominate STEM region:
While international students are eligible for one year of opt, people from Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) fields, study their graduation, get additional two years of work experience under the opt program. The two were an Employment Authority Document (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) (EAD) and 2024, compared to 1.60 lakh 2023. This explains the ice-report from 2023 to 21.1 percent growth and continuous growth, in the fourth year.In 2024, around 1.65 lakh international students participated in the Stem-Opt Extension program. Ice-report states that Indian students are particularly prominent in the subsequent Opt-Stem Extension Program, which is an accounting for the participants 48.0%. And 20.4%from China.
