New Delhi: Congress leader and opposition Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed Union Cabinet’s decision on Wednesday Caste census But for its completion, a clear time was sought, called it just a “first step” towards deep social reform.
Gandhi told reporters immediately after the announcement, “We welcome the decision, but we need to know how much time it will take to end the census.” He said, “We have shown that we can pressurize the government.”
He credited public and political pressure to the government to work and said, “We have shown that we can pressurize the government.”
Referring to the Congress party’s long -time demand, Gandhi said, “We had said in Parliament that we would do caste census. We also said that we will scrap 50% cap, artificial wall which is in place. Narendra Modi said that there are only four cases.
Calling Telangana a model for such practice, Gandhi said that it could serve as a blueprint for the Center. “We fully support it, but we want a time-long line. This is the first step … there are two examples- Hihar and Telangana- and a huge difference between the two.”
Underlining the comprehensive vision, Gandhi said, “Caste census is the first step.
He also urged the BJP -led NDA government to implement Article 15 (5), which allows reservation in private educational institutions. “This is already a law. We want the government to start implementing it,” he said.
