Not Aishwarya Rai, Kajol was the first choice to play Shah Rukh Khan’s sister in Josh, director Mansoor Khan.

Filmmaker Mansoor Khan, who is known for hits like Qayamat Se Kayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander, recently talked about the casting of his 2000 film Josh. In a new interview with PTI, he revealed that the actors of the film could look very different. Aamir Khan was first considered for Aishwarya Rai’s love interest, and Kajol was originally offered the role that later went to Aishwarya. The film eventually starred Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya as twins.
Shahrukh Khan was always the first choice for Max
The director shared that SRK was always his first choice to play the role of Max in Josh. However, when he first discussed the script with Aamir Khan, Aamir admitted that he would be put as Max. Later, when Mansoor approached Shah Rukh with the same role, the actor was enthusiastic. But after realizing that Aamir may join, Shah Rukh stepped back from the project, causing a change in casting plans.Kajol wanted to play Max, not sister
Eventually, Shah Rukh returned to the board to play Max, while Aamir left the project. But casting challenges continued. When asked about playing the role, he refused, instead expressed interest in playing Max, because he felt that the character attracted more.

Aishwarya Rai’s professionalism sealed the deal
Things finally fell when Mansoor Khan approached Aishwarya for the role. Unlike others, he did not focus on which character had more prominence. He appreciated the overall story and agreed to come on the board. Her professionalism stood out, and Mansoor believes that Josh was one of her best performances.
The filmmaker highlighted that his casting decisions are directed by firm belief rather than a commercial appeal. He shared that he does not focus on whether the pair would be a box-office hit, but instead gives priority to whether he believes in casting-casting.
