Havana: The Cuban Supreme Court said on Tuesday that it had canceled the provisional release from the prison given to opposition leader Jose Daniel Ferler, which was as part of a historic deal in exchange for restrictions with former US President Joe Biden.
The court said in a statement that Ferler and Felix Navarro had given a similar recurrence to another prisoner, which “had failed to follow the provisions of the law during the probation period, under which he was under,” the court said in a statement.
Ferler, who has been out of jail for a long time on the Communist-Run Island, was given conditional release in January after the latest tenure of more than three years.
The 54-year-old prisoners were the most high-profile that Cuba released after Biden, which agreed to remove the country from the US list of terrorism sponsors.
Havana claims that it released all 553 people, who had agreed to free under the deal, including 231 “political prisoners” by rights groups. Most of the 231, including Ferler, were scored in July 2021 in a rift over mass protests against the Cuba government.
Biden’s successor, Donald Trump, has since restored Cuba in the list of terror. Ferrer was one of the 75 opposition members known as “Black Spring”, “Conspiring Activities” in March 2003.
He was given six to 28 years of sentences for working with foreign power. Ferler received 25 years. He was released in 2011 along with 130 other political prisoners after arbitration by the Catholic Church.
Later that year, he founded the patriotic association of Cuba, one of the most active opposition organizations in one-sided state. He was sent back to jail after an unprecedented protest of July 2021.
