‘Terrorist Nature’: gunmen targeted Chinese-made hydroelectric plant in Chile

Gunmen attacked a violent attack Chinese owned power plant On Sunday, under construction in Southern Chile, dozens of vehicles and construction equipment were set on fire.
Targeted facility, Rukalahue Power PlantA subsidiary of Rucalhue Energia Spa is being made by Spa China international water and electric corporation (CWE), with an estimated investment of $ 350 million. It is located along the Biobio River, about 550 kilometers (340 mi) south of Santiago.
According to police chief Renjo Mikkono, armed attackers threatened security personnel before setting fire on the site. “They proceeded to burn all the devices there on the site,” he said.
The attack destroyed 45 trucks and five pieces of earth-moving machinery. Two security guards were injured during the incident.
The project comes amidst the ongoing protest from indigenous communities facing this project. Critics have expressed concern about its environmental impact on one of the major waterways of Chile.
Chile’s security minister Luis Kordero described the attack as a “terrorist nature” due to its location and plan.
Rucalhue Energia Spa said it is currently evaluating financial losses from destruction.
