Bollywood casting director Mukesh Chhabra recently participated in an interview on the streets of Delhi, where he shared insight about his career journey, revealed the details behind his casting methods, and discussed his important future plans. When he enjoyed some delicious Delhi Street Food, Chhabra also recalled time when he had a creative difference with directors about an actor selection.
Insight in their casting process
While discussing his casting process, Chhabra said that he begins by reading the script well to understand the story and its setting. He then begins his search for the best actors, until he feels completely confident in his choice. He also recalled examples of disagreement with directors, such as when he wanted to cast Rajkumar Rao for ‘Kai Po Che’ and Pankaj Tripathi for ‘Gangs of Wasipur’, but the directors were not initially on the board. In a light part of the interview, Mukesh mentioned that he has never put friends in his favor and accepted to regret something about some casting decisions.
Personal loss and its effect
During his conversation with curly stories, Chhabra opened his mother about losing and how the unfortunate incident turned her into a man. He shared that he feels completely broken and took him three to four months to recover, during which he went out of his house because the experience was very difficult. He also mentioned that celebrities like Farah Khan, Kriti Sanon and Rajkumar Rao supported him and helped him in that difficult time. Chhabra further stated that losing her mother changed her life a lot, as she felt the absence of female energy in the house, which highlighted the importance of women’s presence in someone’s life.
Future plans for expansion
During the interview, Chhabra also shared its future vision of expanding casting offices across India, admitting that not everyone had the means of transferring to Bombay. He also revealed his intentions to establish branches in London, Bhopal, Hyderabad, Lucknow and the north -east region of the country.
