Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchhez turns to China because Trump’s tariff killed the European Union

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanches has launched a diplomatic visit to Asia, visited Vietnam as American tariffs apply to European Union products.
On Wednesday, the land in Hanoi, where he will meet the top leader of Vietnam, Lam. On Thursday, Santhese Ho Chi is set to visit the city, where he will meet to strengthen commercial relations with professional leaders and discuss possible investment opportunities between Spain and Vietnam.
Spanish leaders will be the head of China on Friday, marking their third visit in just two years. There, he is expected to meet President Xi Jinping and several Chinese investors.
On Tuesday, US President Trump imposed an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods after Beijing refused to remove repayment measures. These stages have pushed the cumulative American tariff to 104%on Chinese imports.

Sánchez has previously taken a soft stance on China compared to other European Union leaders. During the visit to Beijing in September 2024, he urged the European Union to reconsider the plan to put parked tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, which advocates instead of fair and balanced trade rules. In response, the European Union stated that local manufacturers needed tariffs to protect from improper competition by Chinese companies that receive state support.
However, Brussels have recently indicated a desire to improve relations with Beijing. After Donald Trump returns to the White House in January, the European Union Commission Chairman Ursula von Dere Leyen called for “creative association with China”. The European Union’s Trade Commissioner, Maros Sephakovic also visited China to push for more balanced and cooperative trade partnership.
Pedro Sanches is now the first European Union leader to visit the region since the re -election of Donald Trump. Their journey indicates the onset of what a broad diplomatic push from Europe can be, as they see Asia for alternative participation and business opportunities.
