The Trump administration on Tuesday announced that it would cancel a federal policy that requires hospitals to provide emergency abortion when necessary to stabilize a woman’s medical condition. After the US Supreme Court reversed Roe Ved, guidance was originally issued by the Biden administration in 2022. It was an attempt to ensure that in medical emergency conditions, women, such as severe bleeding or risk of organ failure, could still have abortion if necessary to save their health. The Biden administration cited emergency medical treatment and active Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires hospitals that receive medicare funding to provide stable treatment for patients in emergency situations. Since almost all American emergency rooms depend on the Medicare Funds, the guidance is applied nationwide. With Tuesday’s announcement, the Trump administration said it no longer implements that requirement, increases concerns between doctors and advocates for abortion rights to reach out to significant care.Even with federal guidance, an AP investigation last year found that dozens of pregnant women were already being denied emergency care during the Biden administration, which required emergency abortion. The Biden administration had earlier sued Idaho, arguing on the law of the state, who only allowed abortion to save the mother’s life, violating the Imtala. The US Supreme Court gave a procedural verdict in the case, but left important legal questions unresolved, including whether doctors in abortion states can legally provide miscarriage under emergency conditions where a patient faces serious health risks.Nancy Northup, CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights condemned the decision. He said in a statement, “The Trump administration rather women will have to die in emergency rooms rather than obtaining life-saving abortion.” “Hospitals require more guidance, not less to prevent patients who experience pregnancy crises from removing.
