Hurdles on track

However, the route of the national record has been away from smooth. Gurindervi was struggling with serious health issues between 2022 and 2023.

So I started eating outside, but it was not even ideal. My coach Happy Sir arranged for free food in a restaurant, which did not help for some time, but I did not know that the food was not enough.
“Our hostel was very old, its water tank contaminated the water, no one used to clean it, and no one cared. The poor water quality in the hostel made things worse. I also got my water filter, but it did not help it a lot. My intestine linked. My lining was damaged. I lost 10-12 kg in just 8-10 days.”
Despite many remedies, including drugs and Ayurveda, did not work anything: “It was one of the most disappointing times of my life. I could not sleep, and my body was giving up.”

“Gradually, my position stabilized. I won gold at the Federation Cup and Inter-State Championships and joined Reliance in September 2024. With better features, I was completely cured,” he says.

Hard reality of Indian athletics

Despite his success, Gurindevir knows about financial struggles Indian athletics,

“I didn’t start with the goal of getting a job. My goal was always to win a medal. A job would not be satisfied with me. But my senior athletes, who played in the Asian Games, told me that in India, there are not enough facilities, money or proper diet support from the government,” he said. “They advised me to take a job if I got a proposal because you never know what can happen – an injury can end your career, and then you will not be left out. So many athletes finished the job. But the problem is that once they start working, they cannot train properly.”
