Colombia suspended more than 65 students, dozens of times after library protest

The University of Columbia has placed more than 65 students on the interim suspension and stopped 33 others, including alumni and students from affiliated schools such as Barnard College, earlier this week, after a Palestinian protests inside the Butler Library, the university spokesperson confirmed on Friday. According to Colombia’s website, interim suspension prevents students from participating in classrooms, reaching the campus or participating in university programs. The duration of these disciplinary works reported by news agency AP is not clear and will depend on the result of further investigation.In Manhattan, the IV League University also confirmed that several alumni participating in protest have now been stopped from entering the campus. The action follows Wednesday’s incident, where a masked group arrested about 80 people after making their way in the library, wrapped the Palestinian flag in bookshelves, and raised slogans like “Columbia Will Burn” on furniture and picture frames. According to the police, most of them have to face, while some can also be accused of disorganized conduct.The scene of the scene showed NYPD officials entering the library in the riot gear, when the protesters captured a second floor reading room, changed the name of “Basel al-Araj popular university” after a Palestinian worker killed by Israeli forces in 2017. The protesters stood at the desk with the megaphone, distributed the pamphlets, and called Colombia to allegedly divide it from firms associated with Israel’s military operations.The protest was broken at the request of Colombia officials. Acting Chairman Claire Shipman said that the students inside the library were repeatedly asked to show and leave, but refused. “These actions are derogatory,” he said, saying that the occupation disrupted the students preparing for the final examination. “To request the presence of NYPD is not the result we wanted, but to secure the security of our community it was absolutely necessary,” he said in a statement by the New York Times.Shipman also confirmed that two public safety officials were injured with an increase in the building of the protesters. The protesters alleged that some of them also suffered injuries, one left on a stretcher, partially covered, said the guardian.“We will never tolerate anarchy,” said Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City Eric Adams. Governor Kathy Hachul resonated Bhavna, said on X, “violence, barbarity or destruction of property is completely unacceptable.”US State Secretary Marco Rubio has announced a visa review for international students involved in protest. Rubio wrote on X, “Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome to our great nation.” The Trump administration has already pulled federal funds and has detained some international students to participate in the campus demonstrations for Israeli works in Gaza.This protest was organized by Columbia University, Ryuns Divest (CUAD), stating that it targeted the library to challenge the university’s alleged financial relations for “imperialist violence”. In a statement, CUAD wrote, “Daman reproduction resistance – If Columbia increases suppression, people will continue to increase the disruption in this complex.”This week’s protests are under the possession of Hamilton Hall last year and is part of a widely movement movement in American complexes.
