Panama City: Banana giant Chikita Brands have fired their workers in Panama, who have been on strike for more than three weeks as part of nationwide protests against reforms in the social security system, the company said on Thursday. Panaman President Jose Raul Mulino earlier said on Thursday that the strike was illegal and some 5,000 workers were involved. The company said in a statement, “Unfortunately, from April 28, our gardens and operating centers continue after the improper abolition of work and today, (the company) has moved forward with the termination of all our daily workers,” the company said in a statement. It said that the company has lost at least $ 75 million. Speaking in his weekly press briefing on Thursday morning, Mulino convicted the leader of the Banana Workers Union. Mulino said, “We do not know that (Sangh) leader Francisco Smith is a matter of heavy losses in his intravenous that he is causing Bokas del Toro job sector.” Bocas del Toro is the western province of Panama and Borders Costa Rica. The Sangh did not comment immediately. Protest marches and topical obstacles extend from one end of the country to another as teachers, construction workers and other unions necessarily expressed their rejection to the changes by the government to solve the social security system.
