Brasilia: Supreme Court of Brazil sentenced to nine -year jail for former President Fernando Color de MeloConvicted Corruption And Money laundering,
After a decades dictatorship of Brazil’s first democratically elected President, Kolor de Melo was arrested and taken to jail last week to sentence him.
In 2023, he was found guilty of obtaining 20 million reais ($ 3.5 million) in bribe, while a senator between 2010 and 2014 gave “irregular contract facilities” between a construction company and a former subsidiary of Brazilian state oil company Petrobras.
He lost an appeal in the Supreme Court last week, a decision that was retained in the late night session by an entire bench of the court. His case is one of many to emerge from the “Car Wash” corruption scam, which implicated dozens of top businessmen and politicians in Brazil and Latin America.
The investigation highlighted a huge network of bribes paid by large construction companies to politicians to get contracts of major public functions. Kolor de Melo, who served from 1990 to 1992, is not the first President of Brazil, who fell from the law.
Since 1964–1985, four of the seven people who led the country since the military dictatorship have either been convicted, jailed or impeached. In the latest case, former President Zayer Bolsoro has been ordered to prosecute an alleged coup after losing elections in 2022.
