Bangladesh Supreme Court restored the party registration of Jamaat, cleared path for elections

The Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Sunday ordered the Election Commission to restore the party registration of right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami, clearing the way for participation in future elections by the interim government, the interim government lifted the ban on it.Court officials said that the SC Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed directed the Commission to restore the party’s registration.The apex court stated that it depended on the EC to decide whether the Jamaat could contest elections using its traditional “scale” symbol. The EC abolished the registration of the Jamaat, opposing Bangladesh’s 1971 independence, in 2018 to suit an HC ruling from Pakistan. In 2013, SC canceled the registration of the Jamaat-e-Islami, stating that the party is disqualified to contest the national election.Former PM Sheikh Hasina’s government imposed a total ban on the party days ahead of its Oster on August 5, 2024, with a violent mass movement against the students in a violent mass movement.The Jamaat and many other parties supported the grieving.After Hasina’s expulsion, the party appealed to review the 2013 court order.One of the Jamaat’s chief counsels Mohammad Shishir Manir, “This decision will conclude after the decision to conclude the long legal battle of Bangladesh.
