New Delhi: Has the BJP indicated a change in its politics in Tamil Nadu? State BJP President’s AnnamalaiWhose aggressive brands helped to popularize Lotus in Tamil Nadu in politics, said on Friday that he was not in the race for the next state unit chief.
When asked about the issue, Annamalai said, “I am not in the race for the new state president. I am not ready for any quarrel (related to the next chief and do he have any priority for a special leader) and I am not in the race.”
Annamalai’s announcement, which comes after the days of AIADMK General Secretary and Tamil Nadu opposition leader Edappi after Palaniswami (EPS) Meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah, assure the reports that the BJP can search for an alliance with its former partner for the assembly elections in the state next year.
The meeting of Amit Shah-EPS held intensive political speculation about the possible revival of the AIADMK-BJP alliance in the state last month. However, reports claimed that AIADMK had placed the expulsion of Annamalai as a predecessor for any possible tie-up as the head of the state party.
AIADMK and BJP were coalition partners in the state elections of 2021, during which the saffron party won four seats. However, the relationship between the two parties after Annamalai gave a controversial reference to the late AIADMK supremo and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.
Senior AIADMK leaders accused Annamalai of insulting the spirit of alliance and failing to recognize AIADMK’s leadership within the state alliance.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, both parties fought separately, in which independent alliances took place and both were suffering in the process as the DMK-led coalition fielded all seats in Tamil Nadu.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin Already in election mode for the assembly elections already next year, perhaps both BJP and AIADMK realized the importance of coming together. The EPS has announced that the DMK was the “sole enemy” for its party and he was ready to join hands with any similar -ideology party for the alliance.
However, the big question is whether AIADMK can behave as a similar-ideology side with BJP, which has been pushed by Saffron Party in recent times-thread of three language, Waqf Bill. Will AIADMK benefit from this alliance? In addition, will this tieup take all the benefits made from the BJP in the last few years under Annamalai, who introduced the BJP as an alternative to the state parties?
Political analysts feel that BJP’s stand may bother AIADMK about the possible election results when the three -language formulas and Waqf Bills are passed.
Senior journalist and political analyst Vijaya Shankar says, “BJP’s agenda, NEET, language policy, Kesar party on Waqf Bill makes the party a difficult partner for any regional party in Tamil Nadu.
He feels that BJP and AIADMK will have to woo other parties and make a grand alliance if it wants to challenge the DMK-led front, which, according to them, have already received a head-start thanks for some smart tricks made by Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Vijaya Shankar said, “All the current political players must be looking at the trick of the politician from the actor. He is an unknown factor in the next elections and it remains to be seen who is suffering due to his presence in the political field.”
Elections in Tamil Nadu are still a year away. The BJP may have to reduce issues that want an alliance in the state if it wants an alliance. But one thing is certain, if the BJP-AIADMK alliance actually happens, Annamalai will probably be the biggest losing.
