US State Secretary Marco Rubio warned on Friday that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine could run away from his push for a broker within Washington days, until progress is visible soon.
Speaking in Paris after a high-level discussion with European and Ukrainian leaders, Rubio said the Trump administration was assessing whether the effort was viable.
“We are not going to continue with this effort for weeks and months,” Rubio said. “So we need to determine very quickly, and I am talking about a few days whether it is notable in the next few weeks or not. If it is, we are inside. If it is not, we have other priorities to focus”, he said.
The comments came after the meetings organized by France, which took place for the first time since the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, where the top American, European and Ukrainian authorities called to discuss the end of the war.
According to news agency AP, French authorities expect a follow -up meeting in London earlier next week, stating Rubio that he could participate.
Despite accepting an emerging outline for “creative” negotiations and a peace structure, Rubio emphasized urgency. He said, “We now need to find out whether it is notable in the short term within a few days, because if it is not, I think we are just going to move forward,” he told the reporters of Le Borgate Airport.
The efforts of Rubio and Trump’s envoy Steve Witchoff include several rounds of conversation in Saudi Arabia and at least three meetings between Vitcoofy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, Russia has so far denied a comprehensive ceasefire proposed by Trump and demanded the conditions rejected by Ukraine, Kiev Halt military mobilization and supply of Western weapons, supported by Ukraine.
Trump, who promised during his campaign to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, later said that a deal could come by April or May. But at the White House, the talks between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelanski, including a public spat in February, have pulled the talks amid disagreement.
Trump added fuel under stress on Thursday, saying, “I do not blame Zelansky, but I am not thrilled with the fact that this war began”. He said, “I am not blaming him, but what I am saying is that I would not say that he has done the biggest work, okay? I am not a very big fan.”
In the first week, Zelancesi invited Trump to visit Ukraine to see before the destruction of the war, an invitation that Trump dismissed with the dangers directed by CBS, which broadcast the Ukrainian President’s interview.
Meanwhile, both sides have gone close to a controversial mineral agreement.
According to The New York Times, a memorandum was signed on Thursday between Kiev and Washington, paving the way for the future deal on Ukraine’s strategic resources.
