Behrampore/Kolkata: After violent protests in Murshidabad against the new WAQF law, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Saturday appealed for peace, and asked people not to join “uncontrolled behavior in the name of religion”, while insisting that the new revised WAQF law would not apply in Bengal.

Ahmed was admitted to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Friday, but died on Saturday. Class VII student Hasan Sheikh and Dhulian’s 29 -year -old Ghulamuddin faced bullet injuries.
A mob surrounded the house of Kausar Ali, brother of Farakka MLA Manirul Islam, to seek the help of the police. The police met the crowd with fierce resistance. It was in this scuffle that Sheikh and Ghulamuddin suffered gun injuries, but neither the police nor the BSF officials could confirm who fired the bullets. Both were first admitted to the Jagipur Super-Specialty Hospital and later shifted to Beharpore Medical College and Hospital; Hasan was later sent to Kolkata as his position was important.
More than 15 police personnel were also injured; They included Aminul Islam, police officer of Faraka sub-division.
Arrived at Murshidabad on Saturday evening, DGP Rajiv Kumar had a meeting with the SP and then went to Jangipur to meet BSF officials. State lawyer Arka Nag told HC that many police seniors including 3 ADG, 2 IGP, 2 Digs and 4 SP were in the district.
DGP Kumar warned people involved in the violence of “the most strict possible measures”. He said, “Men in uniform will do everything in their power to protect the lives and properties of innocent citizens … The police have taken action wherever necessary. The police should not understand restraint as a weakness,” he said. “The unfortunate incident that may have happened may be triggered by rumors spread from various quarters. I urge people not to pay attention to such provocation, which are clearly the miscreants of miscreants. It is a fight between good and bad.”
