According to state media, strong winds on Saturday affected the Chinese capital Beijing and parts of North China to cancel hundreds of flights, closure tourist destinations and suspension of train services.
The Meteorological Administration of China (CMA) said the winds were due to a cold vortex system that was formed in Mongolia and had moved to northern China from Friday.
The CMA said, “The strongest winds are expected during the day of April 12, with the wind speed at some observation stations since 1951, crossing the historic record for the same period or even crossing the historical record,” the CMA said.
Beijing issued an orange warning for strong winds-for its second largest warning level-weekly, was first marked in ten years that such a warning was used.
At 2:00 pm (local time), two major international airports of Beijing – Beijing Capital and Daxing – had canceled 693 flights, the authorities warned of more serious weather expected in the northern and coastal parts of the country.
CCTV said that some train services including Airport Express metro and high-speed rail lines were also suspended.
Tourist places like The Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Beijing Zoo and Universal Studio Theme Park were also temporarily closed on Saturday.
China is the biggest source of greenhouse gases, which scientists say that climate is causing change and extreme weather is more common.
Strong winds and sandstorms often occur in northern China, a dry region that includes cows and maklakaman deserts, surrounded by grasslands, mountains and forests. China has worked to reduce the effects of sandstorms for decades, especially in Beijing, which is located near a dry region. These storms can reduce visibility, blow sand in buildings and clothes, and cause discomfort in the eyes, nose and ears.
Last year, storms caused floods in various parts of China, killing many people and forced thousands of people to leave their homes.
In May, a highway in southern China collapsed after several days of rain, resulting in 48 people.
