Harikishan to Manoj Kumar: How Dilip Kumar’s Shabnam inspired the actor’s screen name.

Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar died on Friday morning at the age of 87 after battling a prolonged illness.
Allegedly, medical reports suggest that Manoj Kumar died due to cardiogenic shock, resulting in an acute infarction, a serious heart attack. Reports also indicated that he was struggling with decompassed liver cirrhosis in recent months, which spoiled his health.
“He is now out of his grief,” filmmaker’s son Kunal told PTI, saying that his father was struggling with many health issues and was in bed for the last few years.
As the film industry has mourned its loss, it is worth remembering how Kumar’s cinematic visit was deeply influenced by veteran Dilip Kumar.
In an throbacculation interview with PTI, Manoj Kumar shared how his love for cinema began at the age of 11, after watching Shabnam (1949), Dilip Kumar was a film by Dilip Kumar in the role of Manoj. Recalling the experience of directing the superstar, Kumar once said, “We had only Dilip Kumar for Kranti. When I told him the story, he agreed within two minutes. It was a dream true for me. I used to inspect him closely on the set – he used to work easily, he did not do any work.
Kranti, written by the famous pair Salim Khan-Javit Akhtar, marked Dilip’s return to cinema after a gap of five years. The film, which features a contingent of an actors including Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha and Parveen Babi, became a huge blockbuster, enjoying the Golden Jubilee run across India.
According to his son, Manoj Kumar’s funeral will be performed tomorrow at a private ceremony on 5 April.
