What is G7?
G7 (group of seven) is an informal inter -governmental platform of the world’s most advanced economies including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and America, along with the European Union, is also participating with representatives of bodies like IMF, World Bank and United Nations.Following the 1973 oil crisis, the G7 started as a platform to coordinate the economic policy for leaders and has since developed into a major platform to address major global issues ranging from climate change and security to health crises and geopolitical conflicts.Not a formal international institution, G7 has an annual summit, where member countries discuss and align on suppressing global challenges. Although its decisions are not legally binding, the G7 bothers important political weight, shapes the global discourse and often establishes agenda for extensive international cooperation through forums such as G20.
Who invited?
While G7 remains a special club of seven core members, each summit usually consists of a select group of guest nations and international organizations. These invitations are elected by the host country based on current global priorities, strategic participation and regional representation. Invited nations include often emerging economies, regional players or countries related to the agenda of the summit.India has been a regular invite in recent years, reflecting its growing global clot and importance as a global South voice. For the 2024 summit organized by Italy, the invitations included India, Brazil, Argentina, Turkaya and many African countries, focusing on inclusive development, climate action and geopolitical cooperation.
Where is the 2025 summit being held?
The 2025 G7 summit is currently underway, starting from June 15 and ending on June 17 in Kananskis, Alberta, a scenic mountain resort area located in the south -west of Calgary. Canada, which holds the G7 Presidency this year, has chosen the location for a combination of natural beauty and logical control.This is the second time Kananskis is hosting a G7/G8 summit, which was under the then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien in 2002. The option emphasizes Canada’s safety, privacy and adaptable environment for high-level deliberations.Lead-up meetings for the main summit have already been scheduled, with a meeting of foreign ministers, from 12 to 14 March in Quebec, Quebec, and the meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from 20 to 22 May with a meeting in Banf, Alberta.With economic reforms, global security, climate action and focus on digital regime, the summit is expected to attract global attention not only for its agenda, but also geo -political mobility between member states and major invitations such as India and Brazil.

This year’s summit will focus on three comprehensive topics: global security, economic flexibility and technical cooperation.
