Green Fuel: UAE retail legend Lulu now runs delivery fleet with biodiesel from cooking oil used
One of the biggest retail ranges in the UAE, Lulu Group has started giving power to its delivery fleet with biodiesel made of cooking oil collected in its store. The step is part of the company’s comprehensive stability strategy and supports the national vision of UAE’s net-geo emissions by 2050. This initiative is the result of a strategic partnership with the UAE-based clean energy company neutral fuel, which processes used cooking oil into biodiesel. This low emission fuel is now reducing the growing stake of Lulu’s delivery trucks, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on the UAE roads. How to make biodiesel: from waste to fuel
The process begins with Lulu’s in-store kitchens, restaurants, food courts and cooking oil used from catering partners. The oil is filtered to remove food residues and then sent to processing plants where it undergoes transterifications, a chemical reaction that contains methanol and a catalyst. This reaction produces two sub -products: biodiesel, and glycerin. Unlike traditional diesel, biodiesel made through this method is biodegradable and emit less harmful pollutants. According to Lulu, their fleet mostly uses biodiesel mixtures to balance fuel performance and emission reduction. The benefits are clear:
