Trump withdrew the nomination of Ed Martin Junior for top DC prosecutor after bipartisan backlash

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would withdraw the nomination of Ed Martin Junior to lead the American Attorney Office for Columbia district, following questions about increasing bipartisan opposition and Martin’s merit and decision. The final blow came when a member of the Senator Thom Tilis, a Republican in Northern Carolina and the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that he could not support Martin on 6 January 2021 due to his rescue of rioters in the capital.“We have someone else who would be great,” Trump said, calling Vikas “disappointing”, but accepting that it was a political reality.Trump’s loyal Martin was a central man in Trump’s “Stop the Steel” campaign and was openly supported by several persons accused in the capital riot. More than 100 former prosecutors of the DC office publicly opposed his enrollment, stating that it would damage the office’s prolonged commitment for justice. Martin also faced criticism for firing or demoting employees involved in politically sensitive matters and failing to disclose more than 150 appearances at the Russian state-funded media outlet. Despite the support of right wing data such as Elon Musk and Charlie Kirk, Martin’s enrollment was quickly launched under the weight of a public probe. Their temporary appointment is scheduled to end on 20 May.
