Australia government to continue cutting pure migration, hiking for minimum wages for skilled workers

The immigration policy of Australia under PM Anthony Albani’s Labor Government will continue to prioritize skilled workers to meet the market needs to curb pure migration. With the re-election of the Labor Party, the country will continue on its route to reduce pure migration, increase salary limit for skilled visa programs and increase visa fee for international students.

In December 2023, the Australian government announced that a record of 5.1 lakhs would be reduced to a record within two to two years by implementing hard tests on international students and focusing on high skills related to market needs. In 2024–25 pure foreign migration numbers were estimated to fall to 2,50,000; 2,55,000 in 2025-26 and 2,35,000 in 2026-27.
