The court led by Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar dismissed its petition as “completely wrong”. The bench said, “Why only the Red Fort? Why not Fatehpur Sikri? Why leave them too.”
The ruling came in the form of a final blow for Begum, who spent for years in an attempt to recover that what she says is her right ancestral property.
Talking to Annie News Agency with visible feelings, he said, “I did not mention the Red Fort (Red Fort), I only captured Bahadur Shah Zafar’s house. Begum contacted the apex court after the Delhi High Court dismissed his petition in both 2021 and 2024. The High Court cited the “disqualified delay” of more than 150 years to bring the case to court.
In his petition, Begum said that the Red Fort was taken from his family 1857 rebellion against East India CompanyWhen the British deported Bahadur Shah Zafar and seized the control of the property.
He claimed that the central government is now “illegal” and has demanded either possession or financial compensation since 1857.
Begum also said that her late husband, Mirza Muhammad Bed Bakht – is believed to have officially recognized Zafar’s grandson by the Nehru government in 1960 and gave a political pension. He married her in 1965 and received pension after his death in 1980.
Now, with the Supreme Court closing the door on its legal claim, Sultana Begum says that she has no choice but to turn to the public for support.
