Millions remain in the dark; Trains stuck in tunnels: Blackout Hits Spain, Portugal, France and Belgium

Millions of people were affected on Monday after cutting power in Spain, Portugal, Belgium and part of southern France. Working to identify the origin of blackout

The reason behind the outage was not immediately identified. However, the Spain government is working “to identify the origin” of the blackout, the PM’s office said.

Blackout started around 12:30 pm local time
Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE reported that the blackout began around 12:30 pm local time, affecting the important infrastructure such as Spain’s Parliament, Metro Stations, across the country and even RTVE’s own news rooms. In Barcelona and nearby cities, residents flooded the neighborhood WhatsApp groups with a blackout report.
In Portugal, electric failures killed Lisbon and surrounding areas, as well as the northern and southern parts of the country. According to the local media outlet expresso, the Portuguese distributor e-raids blamed disintegration for “a problem with the European power system”. The company said it had to cut electricity in specific areas to stabilize the network. Reports indicated that some parts of France were also affected.
Outage caused widespread disintegration: Mobile phone networks were below for mass voice calls, although some messaging apps remained functional. In Lisbon, the Metro allegedly failed to ground for a stop and traffic lights at the city center, causing traffic chaos.
Officials of the two countries have not yet informed how many people were affected or how long it will take to restore services.
