Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi met Jammu and Kashmir CM Umar Abdullah at his residence on Friday, in view of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahgam, which claimed 26 lives. He also visited one of the victims of the attack in Srinagar and said that the idea behind the attack was to divide the society.
“This is a terrible tragedy. I came here as to what is going on and to help,” the Congress MP said, “My love and affection goes out for all those who have lost family members. I want everyone to know that the nation stands as one with them.”
Gandhi also met with the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and assured that “both of them and our party would fully support him.”

Speaking of the motive behind the attack, he said, “The idea behind what has happened is to divide the society, and it is important that every Indian united and the terrorists are trying to do what they are trying to do. It is sad to see that some people are attacking my brothers and sisters from Kashmir and the rest of the country.
Gandhi also attended an all-party meeting on Thursday, which was called by the Center to discuss the security situation and India’s response. He confirmed that the opposition unanimously condemned the attack and supported the government’s measures.
He said, “The entire people of Jammu and Kashmir have condemned this terrible act and at this time are completely supporters of the nation. I met one of the people who were injured,” he said.
After the attack, the Government of India introduced strong counteres against Pakistan, alleging that it was accused of continuing and supporting cross -border terrorism.
The attack in Besaran Meadow in Pahgam on 22 April injured dozens and expressed national displeasure.
