3 new judges take oath, SC 34 reaches its entire strength

New Delhi: Chief Justice Bra Gavai took oath as three new SC judges, Justice NV Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi and Chandurkar on Friday. With this, SC 34 reached constitutionally accepted strength of judges.On 26 May, CJI Gavai, and Justice Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, JK Maheshwari and BV Nagarthana recommended the appointment of Karnataka HC CJ Anjaria, Gauhati HC CJ Bishnoi and Bombay HC’s Nyaya Chandurkar. Justice Anjaria and Chandurkar will have slightly lower than a five -year term, while Justice Bishnoi will have a tenure of less than four years in SC. Justice Anjaria was appointed as a judge of Gujarat HC on 21 November 2011, and was sworn in as CJ of Karnataka HC on 25 February 2024. Justice Bishnoi was appointed as a judge of Rajasthan HC on 8 January 2013, and became the CJ of Gauhati HC on 5 February 2024. Justice Chandrakar practiced at Nagpur Peeth of Bombay HC since 1992 and was appointed Bombay HC judge on 21 June 2013.On his first day at the office, Justice Chandra was the bench partner of CJI Gawai and Justice AG Masih. Justice Bishnoi was part of the bench of Justice Kant and Dipankar Dutta, while Justice Anjaria was part of the back of Justice Vikram Nath and Sanjay Kumar.
